Centering prayer is a personal daily practice rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition which began in the early Church and persisted for centuries, both in monastic communities and the broader Church. The prayer practice is based on the wisdom tradition saying of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount: “When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:6).
