CATHOLIC CHURCH & SCHOOL
Liturgical Ministries
of the Holy Mass
There are many important roles in the celebration of our Holy Mass for which you can be involved as a volunteer. All training will be provided.
Altar Server
Altar servers are chosen from among the faithful who display a desire to serve in a more intimate way during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The primary duty of the altar server is to assist the priests and deacons at the Mass.

Servers respond to the prayers and dialogues of the priest along with the congregation, and join in singing the hymns and other chants.

Eucharistic Minister
In 1971, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist were first permitted in the United States in response to a request of the American bishops to allow laypersons to assist priests and deacons in giving Holy Communion.
Extraordinary ministers are also used in order that the sick or homebound may receive communion.

Greeter
The greeter welcomes regular members and visitors with a smile, hug or handshake as they arrive in the doors and direct the flow of traffic inside the church.

They direct attendees to restrooms and show them where other facilities are located.

At the end of service they open doors again to direct the flow of traffic exiting the church.

Lector
The lector is trained and instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel.

The lector has to be truly suited to carrying out their function and be carefully prepared, so that by their hearing the readings from the sacred texts, the faithful may conceive in their hearts a sweet and living affection for Sacred Scripture.

Usher
Before Mass starts, the ushers are available to answer visitors’ questions and extend extra help in seating those who need assistance.
During Mass ushers are responsible to take up the church offering. Ushers have a goal of minimizing distractions during Mass and standing ready to assist anyone in the congregation who might need help, to aid latecomers in finding a seat, and to inform those in the sanctuary of any urgent matters.
